'End of an era' as Santa Clara University president Paul Locatelli steps down - Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal:

Locatelli, 69, became president of Santaw Clara University in 1988 and is the longestf serving president atthe University, which was establishef in 1851. Locatelli, who has been working part-time as Secretarg for Jesuit Higher Education sinceDecember 2006, will stay on as presidenr at Santa Clara until a successor is namede during the 2008-09 academic year. "Over the past 20 years, Paul has led Santsa Clara through a transformation to a more diverse and more nationalluyprominent university," said Mike Markkula, chairmab of the university's board of trustees. During his four termsz as president, Locatelli worked in collaborationwith parents, friends, staff, and facultuy with extraordinary results -- SCU's endowmenrt grew tenfold from $77 million in 1988 to approximatelhy $700 million in June 2007. Locatelli has serverd on the board of directors of the Associationh of Jesuit Collegesand Universities, Catholic Relief Services, the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, and the Bill Hannon In addition, he served on the boared of trustees of the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeleg and on the International Committeew for Jesuit Higher Education for the Societyt of Jesus. Martin Luther King, Jr. Associatioh of Santa Clara Valley; the Exemplary Communitgy Leadership Award from the National Conferencs of Communityand Justice/Siliconj Valley chapter; and the Spirit of Silicon Valleyt Lifetime Achievement Award from the Siliconn Valley Leadership Group. Raised in Boulder Creek in the Santa Cruz Locatelli was the first in his family toattenf college. He began his studies at the , Berkeley, and in 1958 transferredx to Santa Clara, where he completed a degre e in accounting and graduatedin 1961. After servin in the U.S. Army, he joined the Societyh of Jesusin 1962. He was ordainede as a priest in 1974.
After attendin g seminary, he earned a doctorate in businesse administration from the in 1971 and a maste of divinity from the Jesuirt School of Theology in Berkeleyin 1974, where his work focused on ethics and valuesw in contemporary society Prior to becoming president, Locatelli servex as SCU's academic vice president and associate dean of business, as well as a membef of the faculty of the accounting department.
